Setup guide

Most people are flying with Lyra in about ten minutes.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • A Windows PC running Elite Dangerous. Lyra doesn't work with the console versions, because it reads the game's files on your PC.
  • A microphone that already works in Windows and is set as the default.
  • An internet connection. Lyra's AI runs on Google's Gemini Flash model, so Lyra needs to be online to understand you and reply.
  • Your invite email, which has your access code and download access.

Steps

  1. Download the installer

Go to the download page and enter the tester password from your invite email. Then download the installer.

  2. Run the installer

During testing, Windows may show a blue "Windows protected your PC" message, because test builds aren't yet signed. If you downloaded the file from lyracopilot.com, choose More info, then Run anyway. Don't run a Lyra installer you got from anywhere else.

  3. Accept the agreement and enter your access code

The first time Lyra starts, it walks you through a few screens:

    1. The user agreement. Tick both boxes: one to accept the agreement, and one to agree not to send Lyra hateful, abusive or illegal content. You can read the same agreement on this site first.
    2. How Lyra works. A quick page on what Lyra does and doesn't do, and how she presses keys.
    3. Your access code. Paste in the code from your invite email. It's linked to you, so keep it to yourself. If someone else uses it, your access may be switched off.
    4. The speech model download. A one-time download of about 150 MB, so give it a minute.
  4. Check your key bindings

Lyra works the ship by pressing the keys you've set in Elite's controls. Any action you want Lyra to handle needs a keyboard key assigned. If you only have it on a joystick or HOTAS button, add a keyboard key as the second binding. Your joystick keeps working as before.

  5. Choose your push-to-talk key

Pick the key or button you'll hold while talking to Lyra. It can be a keyboard key or a joystick or HOTAS button. Choose one that isn't already used for something in Elite.

Lyra uses your Windows default microphone. If you have more than one, choose the one you want in Lyra's settings.

  6. Launch Elite Dangerous and say hello

Start the game as normal. Once you're in your ship, hold your push-to-talk key and try "Lyra, what system are we in?" or "Lyra, deploy the landing gear."

If something isn't working

  • Lyra can't hear you: make sure you're holding your push-to-talk key while you speak, and that the right microphone is selected in Lyra's settings.
  • Lyra answers but doesn't press anything: the action probably has no keyboard key in Elite's controls. See step 4.
  • Lyra doesn't seem to know what's happening in game: make sure you're running the PC version and are fully loaded into the game, not on the main menu.

The FAQ covers more problems. Please read it before getting in touch, as Lyra is built and supported by one person.
